The town of Adel received its charter in April of 1835 and the first mayor, John F. Bell, was elected in August of that same year. In the early years, Adel’s main source of income was cotton and timber. However, in the late 1800s, the boll weevil ruined the cotton crop and the farmers turned to peanuts and peaches as their main source of income.
In the early 1900s, Adel was known as the “Peach Capital of the World” due to its abundance of peaches. Each spring, the town held the annual Peach Festival, which attracted tourists from all over the country. The festival also included a parade and a beauty pageant, which was a popular event for many years.
Adel is also home to the historic and beautiful Adel City Park. This park, which was established in 1929, is the oldest park in Georgia. It features a lake, walking trails, and picnic areas and is a great place for locals and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
