Hahira, Georgia is a small city located in the northwest corner of Lowndes County. This charming town is home to just over 2,700 residents and is the northern entrance to the county via I-75 and US highway 41. Even though Hahira is a small town, it’s full of history and interesting stories.
The town of Hahira received its charter in October of 1891 and the first mayor, Henry Briggs Lawson, was elected in November of that same year. In the early years, Hahira’s main source of income was cotton and timber. However, in 1920, the boll weevil ruined the cotton crop and the farmers turned to tobacco as their main source of income.
In the late 1920s, a group of Hahira businessmen decided to start their own cigarette manufacturing plant in the city. They built the factory in 1926 and held a contest to choose a name for the cigarettes. The name “Oteen” was chosen, after a North Carolina town, and the packs featured an Indian on the front and a wigwam on the back. The company was sold to Julep Cigarette Company in the early 1930s and Hahira became the manufacturing site for the nationally distributed “Happy Days” cigarettes. Read more about Hahira, GA.
Tobacco farming is still a major industry in Hahira, but it’s not the only thing the city has to offer. The community is full of warm and friendly people who are always willing to lend a helping hand. The citizens of Hahira take great pride in their history and the accomplishments of the city.
