Hahira 2

Hahira, Georgia, is a small city located in northwest Lowndes County with a population of approximately 2,737 people according to the 2010 census. The town was incorporated in 1891 and has since developed a vibrant and unique culture.

Located just 4 miles inside the county line along I-75 and US highway 41, Hahira is 11 miles south of Adel, 11 miles north of Valdosta, 15 miles west of Moody Air Force Base, 39 miles east of Thomasville and 29 miles north of the Georgia-Florida state line.

The origin of the town’s name is a mystery, though there are two popular theories. The first is that the town’s first postmaster, Berry Folsom, created the name from the Bible. The second is that a local Indian named “Hira” would rest and watch the iron horse go by and when people passed they would wave their hands and say “Hey, Hira”. Learn more.

The town’s economy was primarily based on farming until the 1920s when the Boll Weevil ruined the cotton crop, forcing farmers to turn to tobacco as their main source of income. Timber and its by-products were also important to the local economy.

In the late 1920s, a group of tobacco businessmen built a cigarette factory in Hahira. The factory was used to manufacture a brand of cigarettes called “Oteen” until the Depression forced them to sell their interest in the company to Julep Cigarette Company. The factory was used until 1998, when it was demolished and the bricks and lumber salvaged for reuse.

Hahira is still a farming community today, with tobacco as one of its main crops. The town is also known for its unique characteristics of small-town life, which have been largely preserved. The citizens are its most valuable resource, as everyone in Hahira is a neighbor and is willing to lend a helping hand when needed. The citizens also take great pride in the history of their town and what it has achieved.

Though the town has not changed much in terms of large industries, it is by no means behind the times. Hahira is a vibrant town that is increasingly being recognized as a great place to visit or live. Civic organizations are always offering assistance in any way needed, and the town’s leadership works together to build consensus to move the city forward. Read more about this site.
