Hahira, Georgia is a small city located in the northwest corner of Lowndes County. With a population of just over 2,700 people, Hahira is a quaint and unique community that offers a unique experience. Named after the Bible’s Pi-Hahiroth, the origin of the name Hahira remains a mystery to this day.
The city of Hahira was officially recognized in 1891 and the first mayor, Henry Briggs Lawson, was elected in November of that same year. At the time, the town had a few stores and by 1904, a bank opened. The main crop grown in Hahira was cotton until the boll weevil ruined the farmers' main cash crop. The farmers then turned to tobacco as their main source of income. See next article.
In the late 1920's, a group of Hahira tobacco businessmen decided to save money and started manufacturing their own brand of cigarettes in Hahira. The factory was opened in 1926 and a contest was held to select a name for the cigarettes. The packs featured an Indian on the front and a wigwam on the back.
The town of Hahira is now known for its unique characteristics of small town life that have been preserved. The citizens of Hahira are its most valuable resource. Everyone in Hahira is a neighbor and is willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Volunteers for projects that take place can be found in abundance. Hahira's leadership works together to build consensus in order to move the city forward.
One of the main events that take place in Hahira is the Hahira Honeybee Festival. This festival celebrates the bee industry that was brought to the area in the early 1900's. The honeybee industry was started by W.L. Morgan, who introduced beekeeping to the area at Troupville. Learn more.
