Hahira 7

Hahira, Georgia is a small city located in South Georgia along I-75. With a population of over 2,500, Hahira is situated just four miles inside the Lowndes County line along I-75 and US Highway 41. It is 11 miles south of Adel, Georiga, 11 miles north of Valdosta, Georgia, 15 miles west of Moody Air Force Base, 39 miles east of Thomasville, Georgia, and 29 miles north of the Georgia-Florida state line.

The origin of the name Hahira (pronounced hay-Hi-ra) is unknown, but there are two folklores that explain the name. The first is that Berry Folsom, Hahira’s first postmaster, created the name. The other is that there was an Indian named “Hira” who would stop near the railroad tracks near present-day Hahira to rest and watch the iron horse go by. When people passed, they would wave their hands and say, “Hey, Hira”. Read next blog post.

Hahira was incorporated in October of 1891 and its first mayor, Henry Briggs Lawson, was elected in November of 1891. During this time, the main crop was cotton and there were very few stores. The town opened a bank in 1904 and a newspaper in 1906. There was only one doctor practicing in the 1890’s, but the late 1920’s and early 1930’s brought boxing to the area with Hahira at the forefront. During this time, it also brought the bee industry. Before settlers arrived in South Georgia, there were no honeybees to pollinate their crops.

In the late 1920’s, a group of Hahira tobacco businessmen decided they could save money by manufacturing their own cigarettes in Hahira. The factory was built in 1926 and “Oteen”, the name of a North Carolina town, was chosen as the name for the cigarettes. The packs featured an Indian on the front and a wigwam on the back. In the 1930’s, the businessmen sold their interest in the company to Julep Cigarette Company, making Hahira the manufacturing site for the nationally distributed “Happy Days” cigarettes for several years.

Today, Hahira is still a farming community with tobacco as one of its main crops and the larger industries have moved to other areas around it. The citizens are the most valuable resource. They are hard-working, congenial, and warm-hearted and take great pride in Hahira’s history and what it has achieved. Civic organizations are always offering assistance in any way needed and the word “team” can be used to sum up the leadership in Hahira.
