Hahira, Georgia is a small city located along I-75, sixteen miles north of the Florida border in extreme southern Georgia. The city is known for its excellent schools, low crime rate and easy-going way of life. According to the 2010 census, the population of Hahira is 2,737, up from 1,626 in 2000. Hahira is the northern gateway into Lowndes County, which is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Georgia.
The city was incorporated on October 2, 1891 and has become known as the Home of the Honey Bee. With a population of just over 2,800, Hahira offers a charming, small-town atmosphere. Hahira is also home to many historic resources, such as the Stanfil Building, Norfolk Southern Railroad Caboose, City Cafe, old Smith Hospital building, Court House, Gold Leaf Hotel, turn of the century Churches and of course City Hall. Most of the daily needs of residents are within a short distance of one another, and people are able to walk or ride their golf carts around town to shop for food, gifts and clothing, as well as do their banking.
The city also has a wastewater treatment facility that is capable of treating up to 400,000 gallons per day, and uses a state-of-the-art Created Wetlands and a land application system where treated wastewater is applied directly to approximately 60 acres of agricultural land by irrigation methods. This allows the living filter of soil and growing vegetation to continue the treatment process and provide nutrients to the ground.
Since 1991, Hahira has been designated a "Tree City USA" and has a citywide beautification program. In 2001, the city became one of 50 small towns in Georgia to be awarded the Better Hometown Designation by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
