Before the Civil War, the economy of Valdosta revolved around cotton, a profitable crop in the United States. Cotton plantations relied on enslaved field laborers. However, boll weevil killed much of the crop in the Valdosta area. During the 1920s and 1930s, Valdosta's economy began to shift away from cotton. Instead, agriculture in the area shifted to pine timber and tobacco. During World War II, the Moody Air Force Base was opened in Valdosta, and the base played a vital role in the United States' war effort.

The city was also a destination for vacationers traveling to Florida. The city was also the site of several lynchings in the early twentieth century. Valdosta was also the site of Lady Chablis' performance in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

In the mid-20th century, Interstate 75 was built through Valdosta, and the city's commercial district moved west of the downtown area. Valdosta was also the smallest city in the United States to install a public transit system. The streetcar line was operated by the Valdosta Street Railway Company from 1899 to 1924. The tracks were later removed, and used as scrap metal for the war effort. More about Valdosta, GA.
